Air Force fencing completed competition at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Fencing Championships Sunday at Burnham Pavilion on the campus of Stanford University in Stanford, Calif. Freshman Jack Griffith led the way by winning the men's foil competition.
It was the second title for Griffith in as many days, as he also claimed the foil title at the NCAA West Regional the day before. Griffith defeated Luke Park of Stanford, 15-5, in the semifinals and Lawrence Song of UC San Diego, 15-12, in the finals. Griffith was also instrumental in the team relay event that saw Air Force defeat UC San Diego.
Air Force also got runner-up finishes out of a pair of freshmen on the women's side.
Melissa Kline finished second in women's foil. She defeated Kyra Wu of UC San Diego, 15-9, in the semifinals and fell to Crystal Qian of Stanford in the championship match.
Mira Vestel finished second in the women's saber. She defeated Carolina Geyer of Incarnate Word, 15-8, in the semifinals and fell to Joy Yun of Stanford in the championship match.
Junior Josie Ratzlaff had a third-place finish in women's epee.
"What a weekend full of many exciting and great moments for our team," head coach Omar Elgeziry said. "I am so proud of all our cadets and the fantastic fights they put on the strips throughout the weekend. I will wait eagerly for Tuesday to see how many cadets we qualified for NCAA Championships. But we did fight very hard. Go Falcons!"
Air Force returns to action at the NCAA Championships March 23-26 in Durham, NC.
