Falcons open series versus Aztecs with loss

SAN DIEGO- The Falcons mustered just four hits against the Aztecs on Friday, as San Diego State managed eight runs over the final three innings to put away Air Force 11-0.

Doyle Gehring was rock-solid in his 5.0 innings, allowing just three runs (two earned) as well as six hits, three walks and seven strikeouts. Including tonight's performance, Gehring is currently averaging 10.9 K/9 in his 32.0 IP.

Jake Greiving hit the ball hard all night, though was only rewarded with a 4th inning double, Air Force's only extra-base hit. Chase Spencer, Aerik Joe, and Blake Covin each produced base-hits of their own.

Sam Kulasingam was 0-3, though his leadoff walk to open the ballgame extended his on-base streak to 18 games. He also picked up his third stolen base of the spring.

Air Force did well to put the leadoff runner on base three times over the first four innings, but Falcons struck out 12 times in 30 at-bats, frustrating any opportunity to find a big inning.

Jason Shuger relieved Gehring in the 6th, and allowed a pair of walks before the Aztecs connected on a three-run home run to double their lead to 6-0. Duke Benge made his 14th appearance of the season, tossing just one pitch to end the inning.

In the 7th, Joey Collier made his second appearance of the spring, and didn't quite have the command he'd hoped. After producing a 6-3 putout to start the inning, Collier walked the next two batters he saw before a wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position.

Collier did make a big pitch to find a strikeout, but his third walk of the inning made way for Ben Weber.

On an 0-2 pitch, San Diego State's Irvin Weems doubled with the bases-loaded to break the game open to a 9-0 score. Cooper Loveridge pitched the 8th, allowing two runs on two hits.

Next, Air Force will resume its series with San Diego State on Saturday, March 25 at 7:00 pm MT.
