COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Air Force captured a pair of weekly awards from the Mountain West this afternoon (April 11), as the league office announced that sophomore Collin Schulz was named the MW Men's Field Athlete of the Week and Texas Tanner was selected as the MW Men's Freshman of the Week.
It is the second MW Field award for Schulz – and the fifth conference honor of his career, as he also captured three Freshman awards last year. The native of Fort Atkinson, Wis., recorded a career-best high jump clearance of 6'8¾" to win the Tom Benich Invitational on April 8. Bettering the nine-jumper event by two inches, Schulz accounted for the 13th-best jump in Academy history. Currently ranked third in the conference, he is also within the current qualifying range to the NCAA West Prelim (42nd).
Tanner earned his second Freshman of the Week award following a stellar day that included two PRs and two Air Force Top 10 throws. The Sheridan, Wyo., native opened the day with a career-best throw of 194'1" to finish third in the hammer. Improving his distance by nearly 18 feet, Tanner debuted at No. 9 on the program's all-time list and crushed the Air Force Freshman Class Record that had stood since 2017. It is the farthest hammer throw by a Mountain West freshman this year (fifth overall) and the 10th-best throw by any freshman in NCAA Division I. Tanner followed with an outdoor-best distance of 56'7½" in the shot put – a runner-up mark which moved him from 10th to fifth on the Academy's all-time standings. With the third-best overall throw in the conference this season, Tanner is ranked No. 12 among NCAA freshmen.
