Air Force With 4-2 Win Over UNLV

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's tennis earned a gritty 4-2 win over UNLV (12-9, 3-2 MW) Thursday afternoon in Mountain West action at the USAFA Indoor Tennis Courts. The win clinched Air Force's second consecutive winning season (12-9, 1-4 MW) and third in the last four seasons.

The Falcons opened with three doubles matches that all went to tiebreakers. Arjun Kersten and Jonathan Mascagni won at No. 1 over Dabic/Verboven 7-6 (11-9). The No. 3 duo of Kyle Garner and Phillip Deaton then fell to Rsova/Bailey 7-6 (7-5). Air Force's No. 2 duo of Justin Waldman and Nick Vroman then came through with the win over Ornberg/Atherton 7-6 (7-5) to clinch the doubles point.

The Falcons went 3-2 in singles, with the clinching win by Mascagni at No. 5.

UNLV quickly tied the match with a win at No. 2. Jack Brown, who moved up a slot into No. 4 after Vroman was scratched from his slot due to illness, put Air Force back up with the win over Milos Dabic in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4).

Kersten extended Air Force's lead with a win at No. 1 over Maxim Verboven 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 7-5. Justin Waldman then dropped a three-set match at No. 3 to Aaron Bailey, falling in the third-set tiebreaker 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-0).

Mascagni, who moved up to No. 5, rallied back from dropping the first set tiebreaker to defeat Dusan Rsovac 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 6-1 and clinch the win.

Air Force returns to action Saturday, April 22 in its regular-season finale against San Diego State. The match begins at noon MT.
