Sam Gilman Breaks Air Force’s 5000-Meter Record

STANFORD, Calif. – With a career-best time of 13:30.36, Air Force senior Sam Gilman improved his own Academy Record in the 5000-meter run this evening (April 21) during an impressive run at Stanford's Payton Jordan Invitational.
Gilman earned the top collegiate finish and placed third overall in a stacked event that included elite NCAA and international athletes. While five-time Argentinian champion Federico Bruno pulled away from the field early, en route to breaking his national record, the rest of the field remained close. After staying tucked into the lineup for the first half of the 12.5-lap race around Cobb Track, Gilman swung out with five to go and moved into the front of the main group, battling for the pack's top spot until the very end.
His 13:30.36 finish, a personal improvement of 0.46 seconds, is the fastest ever by a service academy runner, the third-fastest time in Mountain West history and currently tied for eighth in the NCAA.
The full Air Force squad returns to competition next week (April 27-29), when the team splits for a pair of competitions. Part of the lineup will head to Des Moines, Iowa, for the 113th running of the prestigious Drake Relays, while the rest of the roster remains in-state for the Doug Max Invitational in Fort Collins.
