U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Efforts to fine tune the Air Force women's basketball staff are underway for head coach Chris Gobrecht and company, as the Falcons officially announced the addition of Nicole Heyn to the 2023-24 coaching roster on Friday.
Heyn steps into her first full-time coaching role after serving one year as a graduate assistant coach at Valdosta State, while pursuing a master's of business administration. During Heyn's coaching tenure at VSU, the program enjoyed a 22-7 season which included a program-best 20 conference wins (Gulf South Conference), a pair of wins against top-10-ranked programs and a Division II NCAA Tournament berth. Within the coaching staff at VSU, Heyn served in a developmental capacity as a guards coach, as well as assisting in film review and scouting, along with handling a number of responsibilities on the operations side.
Prior to her coaching at Valdosta, Heyn played as a graduate transfer for VSU in the 2021-22 season, in which she led the starting lineup in three-point percentage (.432), free throw percentage (.784) and defensive rebounds (178). That season, Valdosta State amassed a 26-6 record on the way to the program's first Elite Eight appearance since 1984. Heyn closed her intercollegiate career being named an NCAA South Region All-Tournament and Gulf South First-Team All-Conference selection.
Heyn's collegiate playing career began at the College of Southern Idaho, where she played for the Golden Eagles 2017-19, going 42-21 in that stretch, before transferring to Texas A&M International University in Laredo, Texas. During her stint with the Dustdevils, Heyn started in all 32 games, leading TAMIU in field goals made, three-point production, rebounding and steals in both seasons. At the end of her senior season, Heyn accrued a number of academic and performance-based superlatives, including being named the 2021 Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Year.
Heyn capped her playing career on the 2022 roster for Indeportes Antioquia, a professional organization based in Medellin, Colombia. In Heyn's one season in Medellin, Indeportes Antioquia won the 2022 Super Liga Championship.
Coach Gobrecht on Nicole's Addition to the Falcon Staff:
"Nicole has been a winner every place she has been, and I believe we have managed to add one of the best up-and-coming coaches in our game to our staff. I'm excited for our great group of guards on this team to have a chance to work with Nicole and to be motivated by her competitive passion."
