AUSTIN, Texas – Air Force's Sam Gilman capped a stellar collegiate career with All-America honors in the 5000-meter run this evening (June 9) during the final night of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas.
The recently commissioned Air Force second lieutenant earned second-team All-America status following a 15th-place time of 14:19.91 in a tightly contested 5000-meter final that saw less than 14 seconds separate the second through 15th-place finishers – and less than 45 seconds divide the entire field.
It was a program-record fourth NCAA Division I All-America track and field honor for the Hilton Head Island, S.C., native – and his fifth distinction overall, as Gilman was named an All-American at the cross country (2021), indoor (2022, 2023) and outdoor (2022, 2023) championships over the last two seasons.
Gilman was one of two Falcons in tonight's 5000-meter final – marking the first time since 2016 that Air Force had multiple athletes in the same championship event, as junior Eli Bennett earned Honorable Mention All-America recognition following a 20th-place time of 14:30.36 in his first NCAA Outdoor meet.
