Sam Gilman Finishes Sixth at USATF Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Backed by a personal-best performance, recent Academy graduate Sam Gilman capped his stellar Air Force career with a sixth-place finish in the 5000-meter run at last weekend's 2023 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Using his trademark kick to move up six spots over the final 600 meters, Gilman crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 13:27.49 – a three-second improvement over the Academy Record he set this spring at the Payton Jordan Invitational. With that mark, Gilman claimed the top finish by a collegiate runner at the national meet, while beating a pair of World Top 25 runners in his overall sixth-place overall.
Gilman was one of two 2023 graduates to race in the national meet at Hayward Field, as classmate Ryan Johnson captured a 14th-place finish in the 10,000-meter run after clocking a time of 29:07.25 – the third-fastest mark by a collegian – during the meet's opening night on July 6.
