SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Milwaukee and Marquette will face each other Thursday night, before taking on the Falcons. The Panthers, who are 6-5 on the season following a home sweep of DePaul on Sept. 12, went 2-1 at the SIUE Tournament last weekend – a stretch that included a sweep of common opponent Idaho. Despite entering the week with a 2-5 record, the Golden Eagles are receiving votes in the latest AVCA poll due to its strength of schedule – the sixth-toughest schedule in the NCAA that has already included three top-25 squads and will feature top-ranked Wisconsin on Sept. 13.
BY THE NUMBERS
Air Force has never faced Milwaukee and is 0-2 against Marquette – with their last meeting taking place in 1997.
BLOCK PARTY – NCAA STYLE
The Falcons are ranked 12th in the NCAA with a 2.96 blocks per set average following another strong weekend at the net. The squad's 151 assisted blocks are tied for the ninth-most in the nation, while their 37 solo stops are fourth. Individually, Mac Russ's 1.46 blocks-per-set average is ranked 19th in the NCAA, while her 14.0 total blocks against UT Arlington are tied for the second-best single-match outing of the season.
A TOP-10 DEFENSE
The Falcons are holding their opponents to 0.130 hitting this season – a league-low mark that is also the 10th-lowest average in the NCAA after three weeks of competition.
SUAN NAMED MW DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jordan Suan was named the Mountain West Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 11 – marking the first time an Air Force libero has captured a weekly award from the conference. The sophomore averaged 4.54 digs per set in the victories over CSU Bakersfield, Santa Clara and Saint Mary's – helping the Falcons hold their opponents to 0.128 hitting for the weekend.
MAKING HISTORY
With an 8-1 record, the Falcons are off to their best start at the Division I level – bettering the previous 7-2 starts that Air Force had in 1999, 2003, 2016, 2022. It is the best start overall since a 9-0 beginning to the 1994 season at DII.
THAT DIDN'T TAKE LONG
Just nine matches into the year, Joi Harvey has already debuted on the program's single-season top-10 for solo blocks in the 25-point scoring era. The senior debuted on the list with a four-stop outing against Saint Mary's on Sept. 9 – a tally that brought her total to 16
WINNER, WINNER
Following another perfect 3-0 weekend in California, Air Force captured the team title at the Santa Clara Mission Classic. It is the fourth tournament title in the last two seasons for the Falcons – who won just one tournament in the previous seven years combined (2016 Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic). It is also just the fourth time Air Force has won a tournament on the road at the DI level (2023 Santa Clara Mission Classic, 2023 Gonzaga Invitational, 2022 Brown Invitational, 2016 Sawyer Camillo Memorial Classic).
WHAT'S ON DECK
Air Force concludes its month-long road trip next week, when it opens Mountain West action at Fresno State on Thursday, Sept. 21, and then travels to Nevada on Saturday, Sept. 23.
