U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force Women's Soccer was unable to connect the dots on Sunday at Cadet Soccer Stadium, pressuring San Jose State for the majority of its 90 minutes against the Spartans, but the Falcons were unable to equalize, falling 1-0.
What ended up proving to be the game winner belonged to San Jose State's Bella Flocchini, who, in the 11th minute, was found in attacking position by an advancing Evan House. House, with space to march into the Air Force attacking third along the right wing, sent a cross into the Falcon net, where Flocchini was able to deliver House's pass in for the score.
Air Force was able to apply pressure the rest of the way, out shooting SJSU 19-4 for the afternoon, but was unable to cash in on its opportunities, ending the day even with the Spartans in shots on goal (four). At 53', sophomore Chase Borntreger got an open look from the far-right corner of the Spartan 18, but her match-tying attempt glanced off the left post.
In the 81st and 86th minutes, respectively, junior Lauren Mirande took free kicks awarded to Air Force in opposite corners of the SJSU 18. The first resulted in a header attempt by sophomore Reagan Wilson which went far left of the SJSU net.
A yellow card issued to San Jose's Tatiana St. Cunningham in the 89th minute just beyond the penalty arc gave Air Force its final opportunity of the afternoon to earn a long-sought equalizer. Borntreger, taking the set piece, had her initial shot warded off by Spartan blockers then got a second look when the resulting rebound landed at her feet. Flanking along the left of San Jose State defenders, Borntreger found one final shot opportunity, which proved off target.
Borntreger's six shots was a game high; sophomore Reagan Wilson added a season-high three shots on the day. Junior goalkeeper Kylie McElroy, playing all 90 minutes in the net for the Falcons, earned three saves.
