SAN JOSE, Calif. – A furious comeback fell just short for the Air Force volleyball team tonight (Oct. 31), as it suffered a tough five-set heartbreak to San Jose State on the Spartans' home court. After dropping the first two sets by 17-25, 14-25 margins, the Falcons stormed back with 26-24, 25-18 victories – but San Jose State halted the comeback, scoring nine of the final 13 points for a 15-13 win in the fifth.
Just like the first time the two teams played this season, junior Ashley Bible was one of two Falcons to register a dozen kills in the match. Bible and senior Ella Tschuor combined for 24 of the team's 47 kills, while freshman Grace Fiaseu added seven on .538 hitting (7-0-13). The freshman also accounted for seven blocks (one solo, six assisted) and two service aces, helping Air Force to season-high team tallies in both. Overall, the Falcons combined for 12.0 stops, with Fiaseu (seven), classmate Brooksie Isham (six – all assisted) and junior Alex Hatchett (five – one solo, four assisted) leading the way. Air Force also blew past its 2024-best in aces with 11 scores from six different servers. Bible led the way with three aces, while Fiaseu, Tschuor, and senior Ellie Eichhorn all added two. Junior Jordan Suan and freshman Mia Loyd, team leaders in digs (season-high 22) and assists (20), respectively, rounded out the Falcons' list of scorers from the serving line. Loyd added 10 digs to her stat line for her fourth double-double of the year.
The highlight of the night for Air Force came in the third, when – trailing 17-22, the Falcons rattled off eight-straight points to take a 24-22 advantage. Although the Spartans were able to tie the score at 24, a Fiaseu/Isham block and Tschuor kill, completed the rally with a 26-24 win.
Air Force remains in California on Saturday (Nov. 2), when it travels to Fresno State for a morning matchup.
