HONOLULU, Hawaii – Air Force Women's Tennis, navigating a rain-soaked three days of competition at the Hawaii Invite in Honolulu, were able to dig in and earn a number of wins down the stretch of the three-day competition against the Rainbow Wahine of Hawaii.
Day one at the UH Tennis Courts saw the Falcons fall across the board in doubles play. Opening singles in the afternoon, the Falcons' competition was suspended due to weather. Entering day two, UH and Air Force resumed singles, with freshman Sofia Mavor picking up Air Force's first open singles victory, defeating Hawaii's Hannah Galindo, 6-1, 6-4.
Both teams managed to get through the majority of day two doubles before another rainout. Junior Arianna Van Houweling/sophomore Nadia Kojonroj earned a 6-3 over Rainbow Wahine pair Galindo/Makeilah Nepomuceno, and Mavor/Shivanni Selvan battled to a 6-4 victory over Sheena Masuda/Peppi Ramstedt.
In singles, Kojonroj led Hawaii senior Ana Vilcek, 5-4, in their first set before rain postponed play. On day three, the match resumed, with Kojonroj and Vilcek splitting their first two sets before Kojonroj battled out an 11-9 super tiebreak in the third to claim her win.
Senior Alexis Odom, trailing 5-0 on day three in her final match against Ramstedt before the rain delay, fell 6-1 in her first set after play resumed on the final day, but then rallied to take the last two, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6).
Giovanna Sanchirico took down UH's Masuda in a straight-set, 6-4, 6-0 win on the final day of competition. Masuda, a transfer from Long Beach State, was an All-Big West first-team selection in 2023.
Freshmen Maya Michalski and Selvan both scored wins on the last day, defeating Galindo and freshman Emma Forgac, both in a three-set match ending in super tiebreak fashion.
