11/13/2024 4:26:00 PM | Cross Country
The Air Force cross country team returns to action this week, as it travels to Reno, Nev., for the NCAA Mountain Regional on Friday, Nov. 15. The Falcons' lineup will face a stacked field of their regional counterparts for the change to qualify to the NCAA Cross Country Championships.
MEET INFORMATION
The NCAA Mountain Regional, hosted by Nevada will take place at the Washoe Golf Course in Reno. The women will kick off this year's regional with a 6K race at 11:00 a.m. (PT), while the men will contest their first 10K of the year at noon. Admission is free to the meet, which is slated to be streamed live on the Mountain West Network. Real-time results will also be available through Record Timing (direct links to both are available on the Falcons' schedule page at GoAirForceFalcons.com).
PARKING INFORMATION
Spectator parking can be found via the entrance to the Reno Tennis Center (from US 395, or South Virginia Street – exit onto Plumb Street, turn left onto Plumas Street, and the destination will be on your right).
WEATHER WATCH
The projected forecast for Friday in Reno is cloudy, with a high of 41 and a low of 28.
SCOUTING THE WOMEN IN THE MOUNTAIN REGION
Four of the top 10 teams in the women's national standings are from the Mountain Region, including top-ranked BYU. The rest of the regional lineup includes No. 4 Northern Arizona, No. 9 Utah, and No. 10 New Mexico, as well as 30th-ranked Utah Valley and teams from Air Force, Colorado, Colorado State, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Texas Tech, Utah State, UTEP, Weber State, and Wyoming.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAIN REGION
Like the women's field, the nation's top-ranked team (BYU) resides in the Mountain Region. The region includes top-10 teams from New Mexico (sixth) and Northern Arizona (eighth), as well as ranked teams from No. 26 Wyoming, No. 27 Texas Tech, and No. 23 Colorado State, two teams receiving votes (Colorado, Utah State), and squads from Air Force, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Southern Utah, Utah Valley, UTEP and Weber State.
HOW IT WORKS
The regional meet serves as the primary feeder into the upcoming NCAA Cross Country Championships. The top two teams from each of the nine regional sites – West, Mountain, Midwest, South Central, Great Lakes, South, Southeast, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast – as well as the top four individuals not on an advancing team, will receive an automatic berth into the national meet, while the remaining teams are chosen by the NCAA Division I Cross Country Committee on an at-large basis from across the country.
THE LAST COURSE
The 2024 season wraps up next Saturday (Nov. 23), when the top teams in the nation converge on the Thomas Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course in Madison, Wis, for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. The official list of qualifiers will be announced during the NCAA Selection Show on NCAA.com this Saturday (Nov. 16).
