WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Air Force boxing team collected three victories over Army West Point last Friday (Nov. 1), as the two service academies met in West Point for their annual showdown. Overall, the Falcons posted a 3-7 record against their counterparts from New York, with one bout being scratched due to a USMA injury.
Senior Luke Kohout captured the night's Most Outstanding Male Boxer Award after earning a 147-pound decision over Tejas Chadraa, while a pair of sophomores rounded out the trio of Air Force victors. Kenichiro Leong decisioned AJ Sweet in a 142-pound bout, while Elliot Taylor captured his second title over a USMA boxer in as many weeks, as he claimed the judges' decision in his 170-pound contest with Julius Carolos Tanabe.
Sophomore Freddy Ceciliano Jr. and senior Cass Rosa lost their respective bouts in the 130-pound weight division, while juniors Geoffrey Kim and Chinonye Mbanugo suffered the same fate in their two 147-pound bouts. Ceciliano lost a close decision to Aaron Fuentes, while Rosa suffered a split-decision loss to Liz Schmutz. Kim's loss came at the hands of the Santos Riccardi, while Haley Shaw defeated Mbanugo in a rematch of last year's national championship bout. Sophomore Sebastyan Correa Rios was decisioned by Emilio Haynes in a 135-pound bout, while freshman Niko Phelps lost a 152-pound bout to William Ludon and senior Nile Owens fell to William Reid in a 156-pound contest.
The Falcons split for a pair of competitions next week, as part of the squad heads to Reno for the Nevada Invitational on Friday, Nov. 8, and another group travels to Los Angeles for the USC Invitational on Saturday, Nov. 9.
