LOS ANGELES – Highlighted by the upset of a defending national champion from freshman Juneau Kim, the Air Force boxing team had an impressive outing at the USC Collegiate Boxing Show this afternoon (Nov. 9) in Los Angeles. With a lineup that featured two national champions, the Falcons posted a 4-3 record.
In his first collegiate bout, Kim earned a 125-pound victory over Matt El Rassi – the reigning USIBA national champion – from host USC, while his older brother Geoffrey completed the family sweep of the Trojans with a 147-pound victory over Ken Shimmon. Freshman Patrick Weaver added another win over USC, as he decisioned Skeani Soriano-Bilal in a 180-pound matchup. Fellow freshman Niko Phelps rounded out the quartet of Air Force victors, as he collected a 150-pound title over Michigan's Jay Min.
Three other Falcons took part in the LA-based event on Saturday. Sophomore Justin Bonilla dropped a decision to the reigning 195-pound national champion from USC (Robert Zhao, while freshman Djibril Curley fell to another Trojan boxer (Antonio Liu) in his 165-pound contest and sophomore Freddy Ceciliano Jr. suffered a 130-pound loss to Alexander Meneses of UCLA.
The Falcons return to action – and the Academy – next week (Nov. 15) for another round of Friday Night Fights inside the Cadet Gym Boxing Room.
