Falcons complete first-ever series sweep of Midshipmen at Freedom Classic

KINSTON- With the bases-loaded and two outs in the top of the 9th, Air Force breathed a sigh of relief as Chase Spencer ran down the final out up against the center field fence, securing the Falcons first-ever three-game sweep of Navy in Sunday's 4-2 win.

The biggest swing of the game came from the bat of Jake Greiving, as the C1C lined a three-run home run in the 6th to break a 1-1 tie. The three-run homer marked Greiving's second long ball of the series, with the right fielder ending the three-game stretch going 4-12 with 6 RBIs.

Spencer, before recording the final out of Sunday's ballgame, finished 1-3 at the plate with a 2nd inning RBI base-hit to give the Falcons an initial 1-0 lead. He also swiped a pair of bags over the course of the afternoon.

Chris Stallings was 1-3 with a stolen base, scoring twice, as the senior concluded the Freedom Classic 6-11, scoring five runs while driving in five runs of his own.

Jay Thomason added a base hit as well to encompass his 1-4 day. With a walk, Aerik Joe extended his on-base streak to 41-consecutive games.

Ben Weber managed a career-high six strikeouts over his 5.1 innings, allowing just one run to go with five hits. The sophomore did well to work around three hit-batters and a walk.

Doyle Gehring entered the game in the 6th, tossing the final 3.2 innings to pick up his second win of the spring. Gehring allowed just one hit, striking out five while walking three.

After Navy scored a run in the 8th, Gehring trotted back out for the final frame. Sandwiching a strikeout between a walk and a hit-batter, a two-out free-pass loaded the bases for the Midshipmen.

In a 1-0 count, Navy's Brock Murtha sent a deep fly ball to center field, though Spencer tracked it down at the base of the fence to lock down Air Force's first-ever sweep of the Midshipmen.

The win moves the Falcons to 4-3 this spring.

Next, Air Force will travel to UNC-Wilmington to play the Seahawks on Monday, February 26. First-pitch is scheduled for 2:00 pm MT.
