
Falcons fly to Pharr for WAC Championships

Air Force is prepped and ready to compete at the 2024 Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, as the Falcons will return to Pharr to vie for gold at the conference meet. The WAC Championships begin Wednesday, February 28 and will run through Saturday, March 2. The preliminary rounds will begin at 9:30 am MT each morning with the championships swims scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm MT throughout the meet.

Last Time Out (Denver First Chance Invitational, Feb. 9-10)
- In Air Force's penultimate day of competition before the Western Athletic Conference Championships, the Falcons swam with vigor on February 9, picking up a handful of season-best times in preparations for the conference meet.
-As he's been the past few weeks, James Winterfield was a problem for the rest of the pool. The sophomore was the clear-cut winner in the 400 IM, earning a victory with a time of 4:03.40. Anthony Sebastian (4:07.36) and Garrett Kennedy (4:09.35) were second and third, respectively, in the same swim.
-The 100 Breaststroke saw the Falcons again sweep the podium, as Tommy Nagle's 55.27 was enough to edge out the win. Sebastian was again runner-up, clocking in at 55.84, while Mack Nuval (56.05) placed third with a season-best time in the event.
-On Friday, Joe Christ continued his streak of solid swims. The freshman was Air Force's quickest swimmer in the 200 Freestyle, posting a 1:40.17 to finish second overall. The time stands as his best in the event this season.
-Joseph Moore provided a 50.17 in the 100 Backstroke, just a touch off of his season-best time of 50.15. The Falcons lone senior also swam to a yearly-best in the 50 Freestyle following his 21.12. Nick Reda scored a season-best time in the 100 Backstroke, touching out at 52.30.
-Towards the end of the afternoon, Danny Detjen gave the Falcons their top standing in the 200 Butterfly, as the sophomore clocked in at 1:53.89. Kellen Russell (1:54.51) and Winterfield (1:55.29) filled out the remainder of the field.
-The 50 Freestyle also saw Chase Dwornicki close the race with a 21.12, as he and Moore shared fifth overall in the event. Kai Tiede (21.34) swam to his quickest time in the 50 Freestyle as well.
-Tucker Rice (16:26.91) was Air Force's highest-placer in the 1650 Freestyle, finishing fourth. Camden Swigart (16:33.91), Benjamin Wong (16:41.45), and Gavin Dustin (16:50.70) also took part in the nearly mile-long swim.
-The Falcons used February 10 as one final milestone before the start of the WAC Championships, and there were plenty of positive takeaways to build on as the Denver First Chance Invitational came to a close.
-To begin the morning meet, Joe Christ managed a new season-best in the 100 Freestyle, clocking in at 45.90. Gavin Peterman (45.99) and Kai Tiede (46.34) also produced season-best times in the swim.
-Moving on to the 200 Backstroke, James Winterfield was Air Force's highest placer, slotting in at third following a 1:50.59. Garrett Kennedy (1:51.12), Kellen Russell (1:52.59), and Nick Reda (1:54.68) all set new season-bests in the event as well.
-Anthony Sebastian is certainly ready for the conference championships, as the sophomore was the victor in the 200 Breaststroke as the result of his 2:01.40.
-Air Force sent out a number of a swimmers for the 500 Freestyle, though Tyler Surratt paced the field for the Falcons. The freshman's 4:38.28 earned him a a third-place standing. Of note, Gavin Dustin's 4:43.02 in the distance swim reset his season-best in the event.
-Joseph Moore finished third in the 200 IM following a time of 1:51.86, the quickest time among Falcon swimmers.
