RENO, Nev. – Sophomore KJ Johnson, freshman Justin Bonilla, and senior Victor Benitez captured victories this evening (Feb. 9) in Reno, as five Air Force boxers represented the Academy at the Lane Mills Memorial.
Johnson opened the night with a unanimous 135-pound victory over California's Alejandro Rojas, while Bonilla – the team's Boxer of the Night – claimed a split-decision win in his 195-pound contest with Nevada's Leif Noren. In the final bout of the night, Benitez quickly wrapped up the competition by dispatching his opponent – Nevada's Tyler Slaughter - before the first round of their heavyweight bout had ended.
Senior Andrew Lu (125 pounds, vs USC's Jordan King) and freshman Jonathon Watson (165 pounds, Washington's Oswaldo Perez) also competed on Friday, but fell by decisions in their respective bouts.
While the Reno contingent of the Falcons' boxing team is done for the weekend, another group of Air Force boxers will compete tomorrow (Feb. 10) at the Beef and Boxing event in Columbus, Ohio.
