Falcons topped in Erdle Field debut

COLORADO SPRINGS- A late comeback fell short on Wednesday, as Air Force was bested 8-5 by Northern Colorado in its first true home game of 2024.

Sam Kulasingam was 2-5 with an RBI, driving in the game's first run with a double in the 1st inning. Charlie Jones finished 2-5 as well, connecting on an RBI triple in the 9th.

Aerik Joe saw his day end with a 2-5 line, picking up two singles.

Chase Spencer was 1-2 with two walks and a stolen base, as his one hit was a solo homer in the 9th. Spencer now has two home runs in his last three official games after not recording a long ball over his first 24 games.

Christian Taylor picked up an RBI base hit in the final inning, while Tripp Garrish recorded a single as a pinch-hitter in the 7th.

In total, Air Force stranded 11 men on base.

Jimmy Hebenstreit tossed a career-high 4.1 innings on Wednesday, though he ran into trouble in the 5th. After Northern Colorado claimed a 2-1 lead in the 4th, Hebenstreit allowed a single before hitting consecutive batters to load the bases.

Davis Rhyne entered the game with one out in the 5th, as the freshman allowed a two-run single and an RBI double, seeing the Bears jump out to a 5-1 lead.

Another C4C, Sam Hentges, took the mound in the 6th and didn't allow a run. However, the 7th was less kind, as the freshman surrendered a leadoff home run followed by an RBI triple, forcing his departure after 1.1 innings.

Kyle Moats did allow an inherited run to score in the 7th, but the senior southpaw did well to face the minimum in the 8th and 9th innings.

Trailing 8-1 entering the final inning, Spencer homered with one out before Jake Greiving brought in Jay Thomason following a three-base error.

Jones' RBI triple and Taylor's RBI base-hit cut the lead to 8-5 with two outs. Even so, with the potential tying run in the on-deck circle, the Falcons were unable to complete the miraculous comeback.

The loss moves Air Force to 0-7 in midweek games this spring.

Next, the Falcons will take on conference foe UNLV in Las Vegas for a three-game series beginning April 5.
