U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Arriving at the Academy with 13 years of basketball coaching experience under her belt, Melissa Sanchez was named Video Coordinator for the Air Force women's basketball team on Tuesday, marking the final hire in first year head coach Stacy McIntyre's staff ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Touting an extensive resume which includes three years as an assistant in Division III and nine at the interscholastic level, Sanchez joins the Falcon staff after most recently serving as Assistant Coach at California Lutheran University from 2021-24. Along with working the sideline, Sanchez was the lead recruiter for the program, helped develop and implement workout programs for players, managed the Regals' social media presence and was in charge of logistics regarding team travel. California Lutheran, finishing with just a 7-16 record in Sanchez's first season with the team, went 15-10 (.600) and 19-7 (.731) in the 2023 and 2024 seasons, respectively, culminating in a first-place finish and SCIAC title in her final season with the program.
Along with her collegiate coaching duties, Sanchez served in a similar capacity from 2021-24 as a director/coach for the AAU's Basketball Training Institution (BTI), acting as head coach for all U14, U15, U16 and U17 programs.
Sanchez sharpened her skills in multiple coaching roles around the greater Los Angeles area, starting off as Varsity Assistant/J.V. Head Coach at Burbank High School (2010-14), then served in the same positions at La Salle H.S. (2016-18) before bursting onto the local scene as the Varsity Head Coach at Pasadena H.S. (2017-21). A program in need of revitalization, Sanchez led Pasadena to the second round of the playoffs in her first season, followed by a pair of Pacific League titles in both 2020-21 campaigns. Pasadena's 2020 title marked the program's first in 14 years and resulted in Sanchez being named San Gabriel Valley Coach of the Year. In her Pasadena tenure, Sanchez graduated three All-Area players and numerous athletes which currently compete at the collegiate level across multiple divisions.
