Team USA defeated Germany (8-1) and Switzerland (7-0) in the first two games of the tournament. In game three, Czechia defeated USA, 8-6, Aug. 17. USA played Slovakia in the final game, Aug. 18, and needed a win in regulation to earn the gold.
In the final game, Slovakia led 2-0 in the second period, but USA rallied back to tie the game in the third period. After a power-play goal by Slovakia, USA again tied the game midway through the third period. Knowing they had to win in regulation to earn gold, Team USA pulled the goalie with 2:09 remaining and the scored tied at 3-3. Noah Davidson netted the game-winner with 23 seconds left to lift USA to the victory.
"I was honored to be chosen to work with such a great staff and represent USA Hockey with such a committed and driven group of young men," Doyle said. "They battled hard in every game and we knew we needed to win the final game versus the Slovaks in regulation to win gold. I am so proud of our entire group to stick together and ultimately make memories that will last a lifetime."
