USAF ACADEMY – The Highlanders of UC Riverside shut the Falcons out at the Academy, 2-0, Friday evening at Cadet Soccer Stadium. UCR tallied their second win of the season (2-4-0) while Air Force remains in the hunt for the first win of the 2024 campaign (0-6-1).
The Falcons had their best striking opportunities in the first five minutes of the first and second half. Just 32 seconds into the match Tyler Kato gave the Highlander keeper a scare with a shot that sailed over the keeper and just high of the cross bar. Just over two minutes into the second half, Kyle Skevington put UCR on notice again with an attempt on frame, narrowly saved. Skevington headed in what would have been his first collegiate goal in the 76th minute, but it was called off due to an offside call.
Highlander goals came in the 11th and 62nd minutes. Team captain Luka Lukic tallied his third goal this season via assist from Tarek Hamideh. Noah Lopez notched the second goal, his third of the season, via Edward Castro's assist.
The Falcons took a season high 19 shots in the match, but only five were on goal. Nick Bisagno, Carter Rizzo, and Tyler Kato led the team with three shots each. Andrew Durkin attempted two, one of which on target.
Kyle Skevington and Noah Higbie, the towering 6'5" defenders, clocked 90 minutes of action. Skevington has played every minute of every match this season (630 minutes) while Higbie has missed just six minutes of total action this season.
In his fifth start this season, sophomore keeper Will Collins made three saves on the night. Counterpart goalie Carlos Gonzalez made five saves in his first shutout of the season.
Next up, the Falcons hit the road to take on Mercer in Macon, Georgia, for Air Force's only match for the week, Saturday (Sept. 28). Action at Betts Stadium is slated for a 7 p.m. ET start. The match will mark the first-ever meeting between the programs.
