FORT COLLINS, Colo. – With a select few members of the Air Force women's tennis team set to compete in Colorado State's Jon Messik Invitational over the weekend, the Falcons in attendance at Colorado State's three-day tournament put their skills to the test, earning a few wins under their belt in open singles competition.
After falling in her opening round against Utah State's Magdalena Nunez Pureco, sophomore Giovanna Sanchirico went 2-0 the rest of the weekend to win the E Flight Consolation bracket. Sanchirico took down Wyoming's Serina Abriola, 6-4, 6-2, to earn a bye into the consolation final, where she defeated Oregon's Julia Visaya in a three-set battle, winning the first, 6-1, then going down 7-5 in the second before clinching the win on a 10-5 super-tiebreaker third set. A 2-1 singles weekend improves Sanchirico to 6-2 this fall.
Fellow sophomore Carissa Holguin scored her first wins of the fall season, going 2-1 in the F open singles flight to win her consolation final. Holguin's victories were earned in straight sets against both Utah State's Kylee Sperry (7-5, 6-3) and Weber State's Jessica Hill (6-2, 6-1).
In open doubles, Air Force competed in two new pairings; Sophomore pair Sanchirico/Joselyn Limbago and Holguin, along with recent walk-on Charisse Tigrado both took on the third doubles flight, but did not pick up a win on the weekend.
