Golfers open season at Folds of Honor Tournament, Sept. 9-11

THIS WEEK: The Air Force golf team opens the 2024-25 season at the third annual Folds of Honor Collegiate, Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 9-11, at the American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich. The tournament is co-hosted by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA), Florida State University and Michigan State University. Live scoring will be available HERE.
THE FORMAT: Golfers will play 18 holes each day on the par 72, 7,128-yard course.
TV COVERAGE: All three rounds will be televised live on Golf Channel. Six hours of live,split coverage, will be available from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 4:30-7:30 pm on Monday and Tuesday. The final round on Wednesday will air live from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm and from 4:30-7:30 pm. All times are eastern.
THE FIELD: Along with Air Force, the 15-team field includes service academy rivals Army and Navy along with NCAA regional qualifiers No. 16 Alabama, No. 17 Arkansas, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, No. 3 Florida State, Grand Valley State, No. 9 Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, Notre Dame (rv), No. 22 Ohio State and No. 8 Texas. The field includes three teams in the top 10 and six in the top 25. Florida State was the NCAA runner-up last season. This year's Folds of Honor Collegiate features a College-Am and Welcome Party on Sunday, Sept. 8. Each team will also carry an Honor Bag tag, representing the Folds of Honor recipients at each of their schools since the inception of Folds of Honor.
THE LINEUP: The Air Force lineup this week is: 1-Cameron Kahle; 2-Ted Davenport; 3-Eli Huntington; 4-Eric Liveringhouse; 5-Carson Baker.
ABOUT THE TOURNAMENT: The third annual Folds of Honor Collegiate will be contested at the Jack Nicklaus-designed American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Michigan. This year's tournament has expanded to 15 men's teams and 15 women's teams to better reflect the Folds of Honor mission. There are 22 different colleges and universities representing the 30 teams in the combined field. Since the 2007 inception of Folds of Honor, there have been 2,664 students attend these schools on a Folds of Honor scholarship, with an educational impact of almost $10 million. The field of 15 men's and 15 women's teams will feature some of the elite college teams in the country, including 11 teams ranked in their respective national Top 25 polls, as well as the Service Academies, a Division II team on each side, and a men's and women's HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities).
ABOUT THE FOLDS OF HONOR: Folds of Honor is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that provides educational scholarships to the spouses and children of US military service members and first responders who have fallen or been disabled while serving our country and communities. The educational scholarships support private school tuition or tutoring in grades K-12, tuition for college, technical or trade school and post-graduate work, including a master's degree, doctorate, or professional program. Funds for a second bachelor's degree or trade/technical program certification are also available. Since its inception in 2007, Folds of Honor has awarded over 52,000 scholarships totaling about $244 million in all 50 states. It was founded by Lt Col Dan Rooney, the only-ever F-16 fighter pilot (with three combat tours in Iraq) and PGA Professional.
ABOUT THE AMERICAN DUNES COURSE: The Grand Haven Golf Club closed in 2018 and a limited group of patriots joined together with Jack Nicklaus to create American Dunes. The course opened in 2020. Nicklaus led the project by donating his design fee, a group of eighteen individuals sponsored one hole each, and five private investors joined together to preserve the birthplace of Folds of Honor.
LAST SEASON AT THE FOLDS OF HONOR: Air Force was the top service academy the Folds of Honor Collegiate, Sept. 4-6, at the American Dunes Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich. The Falcons shot a 306 in the final round for a 54-hole team score of 915. Navy shot 936 and Army came in at 938. Fonseca was the top Falcon over the 54-hole tournament with a 225 followed by Huntington (229), Kahle (232), Heupel (232) and Ted Davenport (260). Notre Dame rallied for a final round 282 (-2) and won the 18-team tournament with an 860. Michigan State, the host school, was second at 861 and Arkansas was third at 863. Kansas' Cecil Belisle won the individual title, and was the only player under par, with a 212 (-1).
LOOKING AT THE FALCONS: Air Force returns nine golfers from last season, including the top seven season stroke averages on the team. Alvaro Fonseca, a junior this season, was the team MVP as he led the team with a 74.23. Fonseca placed 12th at the Mountain West Championships with a 215 (-1), the best score and highest finish by a Falcon since 2017. Freshman Eli Huntington was second on the team with a 75.23. Senior Cameron Kahle has played every round (94 entering his senior year) in his collegiate career and was third on the team with a 75.53.
MIRANDA ON THE HORIZON: Air Force will host the 54th Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, Sept. 21-23, at the Air Force Academy's Eisenhower Course. For the third straight year, this will be a two-part event with the team competition being played on the Blue Course and the individual competition being playing on the Silver Course. The 54-hole tournament begins on Saturday, Sept. 21, with tee times starting at 8:30 am MT on the Blue Course and a shotgun start on the Silver Course starting at 9:30 am MT.
