Air Force men's tennis dropped a 5-2 contest at Northern Arizona Saturday at the NAU Tennis Complex in Flagstaff, Ariz. Junior AJ Moore and freshman Matthew Staton came away with singles wins to lead the Falcons.
The Falcons dropped the doubles point, losing the third match tiebreaker. The Falcons won at No. 2 doubles as the duo of Phillip Deaton and Moore defeated Piotr Galus and Mateusz Lange 6-3.
In singles, Moore won at No. 3 over Galus in straight sets 6-4, 6-3. Staton won at No. 5 over Lange 6-1, 6-7, 6-4. Arjun Kersten fell at No. 1, Deaton at No. 2, Alec Fritzinger at No. 3 and Langdon Tingleaf at No. 6.
Head coach Evan Urbina recapping the NAU match:
"It was a tough loss for the team today against a competitive NAU team. Our guys competed extremely well, and we were right there at the end. It's a great learning lesson for our team that we will use as this season progresses. We talked about sustaining energy, our feet and legs, and controlling the tempo of the match and the momentum. I was proud of Matt Staton for staying mentally solid when his opponent was serving well. AJ Moore had a complete performance, and improved as the match went on. We are excited to bounce back and compete again tomorrow against UC Riverside.
Air Force returns to action tomorrow against UC Riverside at 10 am MT in Flagstaff.
