- 2025 Mountain West Men's Tennis Coach of the Year
Evan Urbina enters this third year as head coach for Air Force men’s tennis and 12th overall with the program in 2025-26. He was promoted to head coach on July 19, 2023 after serving as the assistant coach at the Academy for the previous nine seasons 2014-2023.
In just his second season as head coach in 2024-25, Urbina quickly made his mark on the program. The Falcons posted 11 wins on the season, nearly doubling the total from the previous season. The Falcons earned a pair of Mountain West wins, doing so for just the fourth time in the MW history. One of the wins was over #65 New Mexico, snapping a 25-match losing streak to the Lobos, which dated back 20 years to 2005. It was also Air Force's first win over a ranked opponent since 2013. Air Force also defeated Navy for the second-straight time at College MatchDay as the USTA Training Center in Orlando, Fla.
For his efforts, Urbina was named 2025 Mountain West Men's Tennis Coach of the Year, as voted on by his coaching peers in the conference. He is the first coach in program history to earn the honor.
Urbina served as the assistant coach from 2014 to 2017 and was promoted to associate head coach during the 2017-18 season.
While at the Air Force Academy, Urbina has been involved in recruiting five ranked mid-major classes, including three in the last four years (2018, 2019, 2021, 2023 and 2024). His 2024-25 class includes the #1-ranked player in the nation in freshman Matthew Staton, a five-star recruit in Langdon Tingleaf and was ranked 9th in the mid-major men's tennis class according to tennisrecruiting.net. The 2023-24 class was ranked 14th.
Urbina came to the Academy from his alma mater Brigham Young, where he was the women’s assistant coach from 2013-2014. While there, the Cougars had a season high national ranking of 51 and finished 2nd in the West Coast Conference with a 7-1 record.
Before coaching at BYU, Urbina was the volunteer assistant for the men’s tennis team at Florida State University for the 2012-2013 season. At Florida State he helped coach the men’s team to wins over #7 Oklahoma and #15 Texas to earn a season high ranking of #16 in the nation. They competed in the NCAA tournament. He also helped coach a high performance tennis program for juniors in the area.
Urbina began his coaching career at Orem High School in Utah as the boy’s tennis coach in 2011-12 while finishing his degree at BYU. He graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Urbina competed for BYU from 2007-2011 and lettered all four years. He is the third-winningest player in school history with a 98-57 singles record. He had an 80-56 career record in doubles. He finished his senior season ranked sixth in the Mountain Region in both singles and doubles and was selected twice to the All-MWC singles team. His highest individual ranking was #110 in singles. He was team captain his senior year for a squad that won both the regular season conference championship and the Mountain West Conference tournament. He competed in the NCAA tournament his junior and senior year, and played both #1 singles and doubles during his time there. BYU was ranked as high as #23 during his junior year, and finished his senior year at #36.
Originally from Huntington Beach, Calif., Urbina attended San Joaquin High School. He is married to the former Sarah Weaver. They have three children, sons Maverick and Brecken and daughter Rivka.
