USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The 68th Air Force Wing Open Boxing Tournament kicked off this afternoon (Feb. 13), as 14 contenders stepped into the ring during an opening round that include four quarterfinal and three semifinal contests.
The quarterfinals were bookended by split-decision wins from junior Robert Miller and freshman Naomi Nunez. Miller earned a 165-pound win over senior – and fellow CS-15 member – Kevin Duong, while Nunez closed out the night with a 119-pound decision over sophomore Olivia Fess. Freshman Noah Kjos also advanced out of the quarterfinals in the 165-pound bracket, as he forced the referee to stop his bout with senior Kenny Dela Cruz in the second round, and sophomore Freddy Ceciliano Jr. moved to the next round at 125 pounds following the retirement of freshman Alex Guild.
In the semifinal contests, newcomer Mason Hendricks won his 195-pound bout with fellow freshman Lucas Gaschk after causing the referee to halt the match in the third round, while sophomore Noah Gilley and freshman Nathan Delarosa secured their spots in the finals of the 156-pound weight division. Gilley won his bout with freshman Jon Compton by referee-stoppage (third round), while Delarosa earned a unanimous victory over classmate Angel Alvarado.
The winners from tonight's fights will return to the Cadet Gym Boxing Room next Friday (Feb. 21) for the second round of the Wing Open Tournament. Action is slated to being at 5:30 p.m. (MT).
