The 10th-ranked Air Force men's gymnastics team heads to Fort Worth, Texas this Saturday (Feb. 15) to take on No. 8 Navy and No. 9 Army West Point in the annual All-Academy Championships.
MEET INFORMATION
The All-Academy Championships will take place at the Fort Worth Convention Center and Arena on Saturday, Feb. 15, as part of The Horton Challenge. Action is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. (CT) and admission is free. Links to any scoring and video will be posted to the Falcons' schedule if available.
SCOUTING THE FIELD
Using a three-score average, Navy and Army West Point are ranked eighth (310.150) and ninth (309.583), respectively, in this week's national rankings. The Midshipmen defeated the Black Knights 314.600-311.900 in their last outing (Feb. 1), while Army rebounded from the Star Meet loss by claiming a 308.550-299.250 victory over William & Mary on Feb. 8. Army's Maddox Pabellon holds the highest individual placement between the Falcons' two opponents, averaging a three-score 14.050 to rank sixth on the pommel horse
AIR FORCE IN THE RANKINGS
Patrick Hoopes currently leads the nation on the pommel horse, with a three-score average of 14.817, while Jack Matlock is ranked among the nation's Top 12 in that event with a mark of 13.817 (11th). As a team, Air Force is ranked 10th nationally with a three-score average of 308.017 – a mark backed by the fifth-highest pommel horse average (53.750) in the NCAA. Elsewhere, the Falcons are ranked ninth in the Coaches Poll and 10th in the Power Rankings.
MAKING HISTORY
Patrick Hoopes became the first NCAA gymnast in any event to reach the 15-point barrier under the new scoring system on Feb. 8, when he showcased a winning 15.150 pommel horse performance during the Falcons' victory over California. Hoopes, who easily bettered the field by one point, improved his own nation-leading score with that routine and know holds the top-two scores on the pommel horse (15.150 on Feb. 8, 14.950 on Jan. 18).
ANOTHER MEET, ANOTHER AWARD
After resetting his own NCAA-leading score on the pommel horse during Air Force's conference win over California, Patrick Hoopes was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Specialist of the Week on Feb. 11 – marking the second time in three meets that the senior has claimed the conference honor.
WHAT'S AHEAD FOR THE FALCONS
The Falcons will step back from team competition next week for the annual Winter Cup break. Patrick Hoopes and Erich Upton will represent Air Force at the national meet, which will take place in Louisville, Ky., over the Feb. 21-23 weekend.
