Warfighters to Win: Mitch Torrel

Mitch Torrel is a 2014 Academy graduate who played in 52 career hockey games and played on two AHA Championship teams.
As a senior, he had career highs of eight goals and six assists for 14 points. That same season, he was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Week as he scored three goals in two games against ranked teams at the Ledyard Bank Classic hosted by Dartmouth. He scored two goals in the 5-2 win over No. 16 Northeastern. Against No. 4 Providence in the championship game, his goal in the second period gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead in the 3-2 win as the Falcons won the tournament championship and was named tournament MVP.
After graduation, he was selected to join the Air Force Special Operations Command as a special tactics officer. During his time on active duty, he served at Hurlburt Field, Fla., Okinawa, Japan, and Pope AAF, N.C., from 2014-2024.
In the summer of 2018, he was selected as the Operations Officer for the Thai Cave Rescue on behalf of the Department of Defense. He was responsible for development, implementation, and execution of the multi-national rescue plan while maintaining ongoing risk analysis. All 13 team members were rescued, and Torrel was the last diver out of the cave.
Following the cave rescue, Torrel was selected as the Special Tactics Officer of the Year for 2019.
He is currently the co-founder and head of operations for Sentry Operations, a service-based company that specializes in helping industry partners develop and field defense technology.
