USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's tennis defeated Idaho State 4-1 in non-conference action Saturday night at the USAFA Indoor Tennis Courts. The Falcons complete a perfect 2-0 weekend to improve to 8-7 on the season.
After dropping the doubles point, Air Force responded by sweeping the singles competition to pull out the win. Air Force went a perfect 7-0 in singles play across the last two nights of competition.
The Bengals took the first point with doubles wins at No. 1 and 3.
In singles, A.J. Moore tied the match up with a win at No. 3 over Sam Wensley in straight sets 6-2, 6-3. Alec Fritzinger then won at No. 4 over Lewie Bouman 7-6 (3), 6-2 to put the Falcons ahead 2-1.
Phillip Deaton then won at No. 1 over Victor Sklenka 7-6 (4), 6-3. Arjun Kersten then clinched the match for the Falcons, winning at No. 2 over Valentino De Pellegrin (ISU) 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
Head coach Evan Urbina recapping the match:
"I'm very proud of the team's performance in tonight's match. Idaho State is a tough, well-coached team. We had to bounce back after losing the doubles point. We played better, but still need to execute the fundamentals in the big moments. Our top four singles were rock-solid. Getting the first sets (two in tiebreakers) was key for us to capture momentum. AJ was super-tough, Alec improved from yesterday, and Phil played a complete match-very solid from start to finish. Arjun played the same opponent he lost to last year, and had to work through big pressure moments to clinch for us. Very grateful to our managers for a professional game day experience, our fans for their incredible support and the coaching staff for keeping the players calm, focused, and believing in themselves. Go Falcons!"
Air Force is off from competition next week. They return action March 30, opening Mountain West competition at Nevada.
