Air Force Downed by New Mexico in Game One

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., - The Falcons (9-17, 2-5 MW)) drop game one, 7-4, to Mountain West opponent New Mexico (14-11, 5-2 MW) at Santa Ana Star Field on Friday evening. Overall, Air Force batters tallied eight hits, the pitchers struck out five, and defense secured a trio of double plays.
At the plate, Alex Adams batted 3-for-4 and marked one RBI. Walker Zapp, Tripp Garrish, and Zach Peters all recorded one hit, one RBI, and one run scored.
Dylan Rogers returned to his Friday night starting spot, throwing all five of the Falcon strikeouts, but gave up four runs across 5.1 innings. The pitcher of record, Davis Rhyne (0-1), surrendered a pair of earned runs off three hits. Sam Hentges followed in relief for 0.2 innings, allowing just one hit. Recording one out, Bowen Brantingham gave up a run before he was relieved by Ethan Dillinger for the final pair of outs.
New Mexico scored first, 1-0, in the bottom of one. Rogers limited the damage by striking out the final batter of the frame to strand a pair of Lobos on base.
After the Lobos' lead off batter was walked, a double play and a ground out from the Falcon defense held UNM in the bottom half of the fifth frame.
Air Force scored all their runs during a two-out rally to even the board at 4-4, in the top of six. With a pair of Falcons down, Taylor started the roll with a double to left center. Zapp sent Taylor across the plate to put the Birds on the board with a single. A double down the left line from Garrish plated Zapp, and Peters followed with a double that enabled Garrish to score. For the final Falcon run, Adams grounded a pitch up the middle into center field, plating Peters.
The bottom of the seventh inning saw a sacrifice fly and an RBI double put the Lobos back in the lead at 6-4.
In the top of the eighth frame, Zapp drew a walk, advanced to second on a ground out, and took advantage of a wild pitch to take third but was unable to score.
The Lobos managed one more run for a final score of 7-4, in the bottom of eight. The Falcon defense got out of the inning with a double play.
Game two between Air Force and New Mexico will take place on Saturday March 29 at 2 p.m. MT.
