Most Improved Award renamed for Larry Cronk
U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – The Air Force hockey team is renaming the team's Most Inspirational Award in honor of former team captain and assistant coach Chad Demers, who battled brain cancer before his passing on Oct. 3, 2024.
A 2015 USAFA graduate, Demers was part of the Air Force hockey coaching staff for the 2021-22 season. Demers served as Air Force's team captain his senior year (2014-15) and was a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, recognizing excellence in the classroom, community, character and competition. He earned the Jim Bowman Award his senior year as the team's top scholar athlete. Demers is tied for the school record with 156 consecutive games played and ranks fifth in career points in the conference era (since 1999) with 126 points (48-78-126).
"Demmy inspired his teammates as a player, his players as a coach, and all who witnessed his gallant battle with cancer," head coach Frank Serratore said. "It is only fitting the Most Inspirational Player Award be named in his honor."
The award was previously named in honor of Larry Cronk, who served as an assistant coach on the first varsity team and also served as the team's equipment manager and rink manager. The Most Improved Player Award is now named the Cronk Award.
