Falcons Fall in Series Opener to UNLV

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo., - Air Force (12-22, 5-9) fell to UNLV (18-16, 5-8), 13-2, in game one of the Mountain West series, on Friday afternoon at Erdle Field. The Falcon batters tallied a trio of hits, while the pitching staff struck out six.
Zach Peters accounted for both RBIs of the game and finished 1-for-3. Luke Elmore and Tripp Garrish both recorded one hit and scored one run.
On the mound, Dylan Rogers (0-4) took the start, going four innings with four strikeouts and nine runs, one of which was earned. Ethan Dillinger took over for 2.2 innings, striking out a pair of Rebels and allowing three runs. To close, Gunner Gilmore threw the final out and allowed one run to score.
UNLV opened scoring in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead.
In the top of the second, Rogers notched a pair of consecutive strikeouts to hold the Rebels.
The Falcons answered with two runs in the bottom of the second, shifting into a 2-1 advantage. Back-to-back singles to left field put Luke Elmore and Tripp Garrish on base. Zach Peters brought them around with a two RBI double sent to right center field for the Birds' only runs of the afternoon.
In the top of three, the Rebels fought back, scoring five runs off four hits and four errors, 6-2.
Extending their lead to 9-2, UNLV plated a trio of runs in the top of the fourth frame.
In the top of the fifth, a strikeout from Dillinger and a double play helped keep the Rebels at bay.
AF saw bases loaded in the bottom of five after Ben Niednagel, Alex Adams, and Chase Spencer were all walked, however a pop up and a fly out left them stranded.
After two scoreless innings, the Rebels notched their final runs to solidify the score at 13-2 in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the same frame, Niednagel drew a lead-off walk and advanced to second but could not make it home.
Air Force will face UNLV in game two of the series on Saturday April 12. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m. MT at Erdle Field.
