PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Air Force women's soccer (0-3-1) closed the weekend with a 0-0 draw at Big 10 opponent, Rutgers (2-0-2) on Sunday August 24 at Yurcack Field. The Falcons combined for 11 shots, five on goal, and six clutch saves from Trishelle Lopez.
"Both teams were exhausted today, but I was proud of our resilience and grit," explained head coach Laura Busby. "We created enough chances to win the game, but most importantly we were solid defensively and got the shutout."
Possession was back and forth throughout the first half and the Falcons managed four shots with one on goal from Lauren Steinlage at the 8' mark. Air Force took nine free kicks but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities. In the first 45 minutes, Lopez matched her freshman campaign high with four saves to keep the Scarlet Knights at bay.
The second half saw Reagan Wilson, Zahra Friess, Kendall Rippley, and Maddy Walsh bring the force, as each Falcon recorded one shot on goal, however they could not push the ball past the Rutgers keeper. In goal, Lopez added two more saves to take her career-high to six saves in a single match and with the help of her defense, was able to shutout the Scarlet Knights.
Busby commented, "This match was a huge step in the right direction and we need to keep trusting the process, the goals will come."
The Falcons will play an intrasquad at Cadet Soccer Stadium on Friday August 29, at 6 p.m. before heading to Spokane, Wash., for a match at Gonzaga on Thursday September 4.
