Texas Tanner Takes Fifth in Discus at USATF Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – Headlined by a fifth-place finish in the discus throw, Texas Tanner capped his stellar junior season with a pair of top-10 marks at the Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships, which wrapped up this afternoon (Aug. 3) in Eugene, Oregon. Tanner was one of two athletes with ties to the Air Force track and field program to compete at Hayward Field this weekend.

The only collegiate athlete to make the finals of the discus throw on Aug 2, Tanner vaulted into the top five on his final attempt, when he unleashed a throw 62.92 meters (206'5") to secure the fifth-place finish at the national championship meet. His placement in the discus came two days after he picked up a top 10 finish in the hammer throw, recording a distance of 73.43 meters (240'11") to place 10th.

Former Falcon standout Sam Gilman, a 2023 Academy graduate and current member of the Air Force World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), capped action at the USATF Championships this afternoon (Aug. 3), as he clocked a time of 13:33.59 to finish 15th in the 5000-meter run.
