
Women’s Tennis Completes Successful Bedford Cup Opening Day

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force Women's Tennis, hosting its seventh ITA Bedford Cup in the Mountains in front of the Falcon faithful, continued building on a successful body of work to this point in fall competition as Air Force competitors earned wins in both stages of competition in the opening day of competition on Friday.
Two Air Force doubles pairs advanced in the 32-team bracket with opening round wins and the Falcons amassed a 12-8 overall record in singles action:
Of the 32-team field in doubles, freshman pair Yule Kang/Jariahlyn Rhoades were the first duo off their court with a win on Friday, downing New Mexico's Maria Matsoukatidi/Ramona Petre, 6-1. The win improved Kang to 4-0 in open doubles and lifted Rhoades to 2-1.
Senior Arianna Van Houweling and junior Nadia Kojonroj were the next Air Force pair to complete their opening round of doubles, scoring a 6-3 win over Denver's Marley Lambert/Yunfei Cai, giving the Falcon captain a 3-0 doubles record to open the year and Kojonroj a win in her first match this season.
In singles, eight of 10 competing Air Force players won at least one match on the day, with four Falcons going 2-0 on the day to advance into their respective semifinal matches set for tomorrow afternoon. Kang headlined Air Force's day in singles, improving to 5-0 after a pair of victories in the Bravo singles draw over Denver senior and three-time All-Summit League selection Claudia Martinez de Velasco (6-2, 6-1) and 2025 Big Sky Freshman of the Year, Idaho State's Millie Day (7-5, 6-4).
Senior Abby Cotuna, making her return this weekend to the Air Force roster, scored a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Utah State's Maria Paula Ramos Garcia, then was advanced into tomorrow's Charlie bracket semifinal due to an injury withdrawal. Cotuna's first day of Falcon tennis since her freshman season ended at 2-0.
In the Delta draw, Rhoades improved to 3-2 off of a straight-set win over Petre (6-3, 6-1) and a three-set battle with Utah State's Kylee Sperry (4-6, 6-3, 6-3).
Sophomore Maya Michalski ended her Friday on a three-match win streak in singles, scoring a pair of two-set victories over Idaho's Soha Singh (6-4, 6-1) and Utah State's Magdalena Nunez Pureco in the Delta draw. Michalski faces UNM's Vianca Corley tomorrow afternoon for a Delta championship bid.
Van Houweling (Alpha), Nadia Kojonroj (Alpha), Sofia Mavor (Bravo) each fell in their opening matches but picked up a win in their respective consolation brackets; junior Joselyn Limbago, competing in an Echo draw round robin, split on the day but closed on a three-set tiebreak victory over Wyoming's Ruby Young.
