USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's tennis completed day three play at the 2025 ITA Bedford Cup In The Mountains Sunday at the Air Force Outdoor Intercollegiate Tennis Courts.
Senior Jack Brown's run through the main (Lightning) draw came up just short, as he finished as the runner-up in the championship match. Brown fell to Theo Coats of Denver 6-4, 6-3. It was a strong weekend for Brown however, as he went 3-1 on the weekend in singles play.
Air Force had one other player going for a final, but senior AJ Moore fell in the Northwest draw final to Takumi Katsuda of Northern Arizona 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8).
Sophomore Matthew Staton picked up a win for the Falcons in extra match singles play. Staton defeated Noe De Col of Idaho, rallying back to win 3-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (10-6).
Freshman Caden Lee, sophomore Tyler Leaird and junior Alec Fritzinger all dropped their extra singles matches Sunday, with Leaird and Fritzinger falling in the third set tiebreaker.
In doubles, the Falcons were unable to come away with the win in the North draw final. Leaird and Brown fell to Urlaub/Snell of New Mexico State 6-3.
Head Coach Evan Urbina recapping the team's performance this weekend:
"The Bedford Cup has been amazing to host and we appreciate the opportunity to compete at home against tough competition. Unfortunately, the team didn't take home any trophies today, but we did learn some lessons and we're proud to wear the AF blue. Matt Staton was the highlight today, saving match points to win his match in a third set tiebreaker. He didn't play his best tennis this weekend, but he did better than last year and he found ways to win ugly. Next up for the Falcons is the Mountain West Fall Qualifier in Las Vegas. Huge thanks to all who came out and supported us this weekend, and congratulations again to AF Tennis legend Dan Oosterhous on his AF Athletics Hall of Fame induction."
Air Force now sets their sights on the 2025 Mountain West Fall Qualifier, which runs Oct. 3-6 in Las Vegas, Nevada.
