Poly's first strike came in the 12th minute as Michael Vick serviced Tanner Casey's header from the corner. Just 64 seconds later (13'), Cal Poly found their confidence with a second strike, this time it was Rylan Firouznam who finished a shot deflected from the post. The Mustangs' third goal happened in the 39th minute when Quinn Mahoney helped Oren Struppel with a cross inside the 18-yard box.
Air Force battled tough in the second half, taking a season-best seven shots in the second 45. The Falcons' 13 shots on the match marked a season-high effort and the first AF took more shots than an opponent in the young season.
Sophomore team captain Oliver Becker led the Falcons in shots with three attempts on the contest while teammates C4C Sean Odle, C3C Attila Toth, and C4C Ben Brophy took two apiece. Falcon goals leader C3C Marcos Goni took an attempt on frame.
At the final horn, Poly goalie Nicky McCune made five saves to keep Air Force scoreless for the first time this season.
Next up, Air Force will remain at home next week as they welcome Mercer and South Dakota Mines for non-conference matches on Thursday (Sept. 11) and Sunday (Sept. 14), respectively. Action at Cadet Soccer Stadium is slated for 7pm on Thursday and 1pm on Sunday.
