"I am happy with four points on the road against two tough opponents," expressed head coach Laura Busby. "I was proud of the way we battled back in the second half and didn't give up after going down a goal."
The first half saw balanced possession on both sides of the pitch until Friess was able to break away and put the Falcons on the board first in the 31st minute. The freshman broke the deadlock after finding space down the left wing and curled a left-footed shot past the keeper, to net her first collegiate goal, 1-0. At the end of the first half, the two programs were tied with a trio of shots on goal apiece but Air Force still had hold of the lead.
Early into the second half, EWU managed to slide the ball to the bottom right of the net, leveling the score at the 50' mark. Ten minutes later, the Eagles pushed ahead to claim a 2-1 advantage. Air Force did not hold back, challenging Eastern Washington for an equalizer to tie the match at 2-2. Team captain Raine Komata moved the ball past midfield, setting up Annika Jost in the attacking third. Jost played the chance well and found a slot after pulling the keeper off the line to even the match at 2-2 at the 74' mark.
Despite a determined push, the Falcons were unable to shift back into a lead.
Busby stated, "This is another huge step forward for our group and we are excited to play in front of our home fans in the next two matches."
Up next, Air Force will return to Cadet Soccer Stadium for their second home game of the season, taking on UCCS at 6 p.m. on Tuesday September 16.
