U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Colorado College goalie Jackson Unger made a career-high 35 saves to lead the 11th-ranked Tigers to a 4-0 win over Air Force, Saturday, Oct. 24, at a sold-out Cadet Ice Arena. Colorado College won the Pikes Peak Trophy for the sixth time and has held the trophy since 2018.
In a scoreless first period, Air Force outshot Colorado College, 13-2. The Tigers scored two goals in the second period for a 2-0 lead. Just after a Tiger 5-on-3 ended, CC junior Owen Beckner scored with a one-timer from Max Burkholder and Mats Lindgren at 9:03 on the 5-on-4 power play. Four minutes later, Carmelo Crandell's speed down the right side took him in front of the Falcon net for his second of the series at 13:09. Late in the period, a major penalty was called on CC's Wilson Bjorck for a hit on Hayden Nichol, but the Tigers killed the penalty, making four saves and blocking two shots.
Early in the third period, Beckner scored his second of the game on a rebound of Fisher Scott's shot at 1:40 for a 3-0 lead. With 0.5 seconds left, Crandall scored his second of the game, and third of the series, to make up the final margin.
Air Force had a season-high 35 shots on goal while CC had 22. For the first time all season, the Falcons did not have a power-play goal, going 0-for-3. Colorado College was 1-for-3 on the man-advantage. Dominik Wasik made 18 saves for the Falcons.
"Our biggest goal tonight was to be the hardest working team at the rink and we were," head coach Frank Serratore said. "Unfortunately, we weren't able to support that effort with some goal production. Its frustrating. Give the devil their due. They were the better talented team tonight and they have some guys that can really rip the puck. We have a long way to go, but it will be interesting when we get into league play next week."
Air Force opens Atlantic Hockey America play next week with a two-game series at Robert Morris, Oct. 30-31, in Pittsburgh, Pa.
