DAVIS, Calif. – The Air Force volleyball team suffered a 3-1 setback to conference newcomer UC Davis this afternoon (Oct. 3), during the Mountain West rematch in Davis. The Falcons fell to .500 in league play with the 15-25, 25-23, 16-25, 15-25 loss to the host Aggies.
Junior Alysa Walker had a strong afternoon at the University Credit Union Center, recording match-leading, season-high tallies in both kills (18) and digs (17). Classmates Mia Loyd and Grace Fiaseu, who led the team in assists (30) and blocks (two), respectively, while freshman Ella Vogel served up a season-high two aces to join the trio of juniors with scores from the serving line.
The Aggies scored five of the first six points to start the match, before Walker put down a kill to stop the run. Sophomore Sonia Donkeng Okpara added a score, but UC Davis forced the Falcons into a timeout at the 3-9 mark. Walker and Donkeng Okpara tallied their second kills of the day, but Air Force went into the media break with a nine-point deficit (6-15). Air Force earned kills from Walker (two), Fiaseu, Donkeng Okpara and the freshman duo of Jenness Orcutt and Kenndy Simon, but UCD won the opening set 25-15.
A pair of kills from Walker kept the score close in the opening minutes of the second frame, while a kill from Simon and an ace from Vogel tied the set at five. Another ace – this time from Loyd – gave Air Force its first lead of the day at 7-6, and the teams traded scores, with kills from freshman Karina Mendivil (10-9) and Walker (11-10, 12-11) keeping Air Force in the lead. A block from Fiaseu and Loyd broke a 14-all tie and sent Air Force into the media timeout with a 15-14 lead. A kill from Simon and a UCD attacking error pushed the Falcons' advantage to two (17-15), while two more kills from Walker maintained that advantage at the 19-17 mark. The Aggies tied the set at 20 – and again at 21, but Air Force answered with a kill from Simon and back-to-back strikes from Fiaseu to reach set-point (24-22). UC Davis added one more point to their total, but a strike from Mendivil secured the match-tying 25-23 victory.
A kill and ace from Walker helped Air Force take a 5-4 lead to open the third, while kills from Donkeng Okpara and Fiaseu tied the set at seven. A pair of scores from the junior (kill, block with Simon) gave the Falcons a 9-8 advantage, but the Aggies retook the lead by scoring the next three points. Mendivil halted the run with a kill, while Fiaseu and Walker added scores at the 12-14 mark. Holding a 15-13 lead at the media timeout, UC David rolled out of the break, scoring 10 of the final 13 points for the 25-16 win.
Walker struck first in the fourth – and added two more strikes to give Air Force an early 4-3 advantage. The Aggies answered with seven of the next nine points to take a 10-6 lead – and used another four-point run to push its lead to six at the 15-9 mark. Kills from Donkeng Okpara and Walker, as well as another ace from Vogel, backed a 4-1 run by the Falcons that cut their deficit to three (13-16). The Aggies reestablished a six-point lead, but the Falcons – backed by a solo block from senior Annamaria Ramos – immediately shrank that margin to two at the 17-19 mark. Ramos added a kill, but the Aggies closed the match on a 6-1 run to secure the 25-18 win and drop the Falcons to 2-2 in conference action (6-9 overall).
