PHARR, TX., - The Falcons posted a strong showing on the third day of the MPSF Championships on Friday evening, with two champions along with a pair of NCAA qualifying times and two Academy records. Air Force currently leads the competition with a score of 564.5, just ahead of UNLV (559.5).
It was a great day for us, said head coach Rob Clayton. It wasn't perfect but we battled all day and the guys were brilliant tonight; we are exactly where we want to be.
James Winterfield picks up his first conference championship title as he won the 100 fly with an exceptional time of 46.06. The senior not only recorded an NCAA qualifying time, but reset his record at the Academy, broke the MPSF record, and the pool record.
The 100 breast saw Tanner Wilson earn the title with a time of 52.19, an NCAA qualifying time and the second fastest time in Air Force history. Senior Bridon Rosales followed close behind in second after touching the wall at 52.43 to sit at third all-time for the Falcons.
Clayton said, James and Tanner were phenomenal with their top finishes.
Diver Lucas Gerten broke his third Academy record with his second-place performance on the platform. The freshman scored 384.45 to overtake head diving coach Kyle Van Valkenburg's previous record of 347.20 set in 2009. Korbin Moyer picked up a sixth-place finish, scoring 296.70.
The divers were outstanding today, mentioned Clayton.
In the 400 IM, Camden Swigart secured a bronze finish with a time of 3:46.07. Freshman Matthew Doty recorded Air Force's third fastest time in the event to place fourth at 3:48.29, while Evan Witte swam a 3:49.03 to take fifth and sitting at sixth all-time.
For third in the 200 free, Joe Christ clocked a time of 1:36.21. His preliminary time of 1:36.56 ranks at number two all-time in the record books. Junior Tyler Surratt logged a seventh-place finish at 1:37.82.
Louie Body (48.76), Dylan Ferguson (48.81), and Garrett Kennedy (49.02) went for 10th, 11th, and 12th in the 100 back.
The Falcon 400 medley relay team of Matthew Doty, Rosales, Winterfield, and Christ closed out the evening with a silver time of 3:09.18.
The way we finished with the 400 medley relay was outstanding and a great way to end the night. Tomorrow will be another great day for us.
