USAF ACADEMY, Colo. - Air Force men's tennis dropped a 5-2 contest to Denver (6-4) Sunday morning at the USAFA Outdoor Tennis Courts.
The Falcons opened by taking the doubles point to go up 1-0 early. The Falcons posted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. After dropping the match at No. 1, Phillip Deaton and Matthew Staton won at No. 3 over Beduhn/Papajcik 6-2. AJ Moore and Langdon Tingleaf then won a battle at No. 2 over Mishiro/Rovai 7-6 (7-3) to clinch the point.
In singles, Denver rallied to the win by going 5-1. The Pioneers won the first three singles matches, before Tingleaf won at No. 5 over Connor Robb-Wilcox in straight sets 6-2, 7-6 (4). Denver clinched with the win at No. 3 singles.
Head coach Evan Urbina recapping the match:
"We had a battle versus our in-state rivals today. AJ and Langdon had a great doubles tiebreak to clinch the point. In singles, we had to overcome slow starts to get ourselves in the match. That's a point of emphasis moving forward. Langdon played some incredibly tough tennis to maintain his level throughout and get the singles win. AJ and Phil both fought back to force third sets, which was huge to give ourselves an opportunity to win. Ultimately, Denver played great tennis. We will continue to improve. Go Falcons!"
Air Force is off from competition next weekend. They return to action the following weekend with a pair of matches in Irvine, Calif. The Falcons take on Navy on March 13 and UC Irvine on March 14.
