RENO, Nev. -- The Air Force boxing team picked up nine semifinal victories this evening [March 13], as it continued competition at the National Collegiate Boxing Association's Western Regional in Reno. Overall, the Falcons went 9-2 on Night 2 of the night, with four wins being decided before the final bell.
The women went 2-0 in the first action of the regional meet, with sophomore Madei Soluren winning by abandonment and junior Allyson Keel earning a referee-stopped victory. Soluren advanced in the 125-pound bracket after forcing Utah's Genna van der Wal into retirement, while Keel caused the referee to halt her 139-pound semifinal with Anastasia Bova of USC in the second round. The men also earned a pair of second-round wins, as junior Ellison Taylor earned an early win in his 165-pound bout with Sacramento State's Cameron Magtee, while classmate Justin Bonilla claimed an RSC-2 victory over Grand Canyon's Elijan Saiz at 175 pounds.
Junior Noah Gilley swept the judges' votes in his 147-pound contest with Washington's Kai Green, while the four remaining victors all won by split decision – with three coming over contenders from USC, as senior KJ Jackson defeated Parker Chang at 139 pounds and the junior duo of Oude Owino and Christian Hughes claimed decisions in their respective bouts at 185 [vs Zihuan Robert Zhao] and 195 [vs Andrew Gomez] pounds. Freshman Russell Klug rounded out the Falcons' list of semifinal winners with a 132-pound victory over California's Alejandro Rojas.
Two other Falcons – junior Freddy Ceciliano Jr., senior Neo Takazawa – also competed on Friday, but dropped decisions in their respective bouts. Ceciliano lost his 119-pound bout to Washington's Leonard Quintana, while Takazawa suffered a split decision loss to San Jose State's Rodrigo Madera at 156 pounds.
The Falcons will be back at the Eldorado Casino Ballroom on Saturday, March 14, as they close out action with the final round of action at the NCBA Western Regionals.
