Falcons Fall to Nevada on Friday

RENO, Nev., - Air Force (7-12, 3-1) fought but came up short to Nevada (13-6, 4-0), 10-7, in game one of the series on Friday evening at Don Weir Field. The Falcons totaled 12 hits while the pitchers combined for six strikeouts.

Offensively, T.J. Oster led the Falcons with a perfect 3-for-3 night and two RBIs. Ben Niednagel, Walker Zapp, Luke Elmore, and Landon Boyd accounted for one RBI apiece.

Josh Holst threw 4.2 innings in his start, striking out four batters and allowing five runs. Gunner Gilmore (0-1) recorded one strikeout and four runs allowed in 0.2 innings. Following a scoreless 0.2 innings from Joey Collier, Easton Miller and Davis Rhyne both logged an inning.

The Falcons were first on the board, 2-0 in the top of the third. Oster led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Brooks Burdine. A Kayden Bradshaw single put runners on the corners, allowing Oster to score on an error by Nevada's pitcher. Zapp recorded an RBI single to close the frame.

Nevada answered with a solo home run to trim the deficit in the bottom of three, 2-1.

In the top of the fourth, Air Force responded with another pair of runs to lead 4-1. With one away, Elmore was hit by a pitch and sent across the plate on a first-pitch double from Boyd. An RBI double from Oster scored another run.

The Wolf Pack pulled ahead, 5-4, in the bottom of five.

The Birds kept up their offensive momentum to shift back in front, 6-5, in the top of the sixth. After Wyatt Hanoian drew a walk to start the inning, Tripp Garrish doubled to put runners on the corners. Elmore grounded out to send a run home while Oster followed with his third hit of the day to plate Garrish.

In the bottom of six, Nevada reclaimed their lead at 9-6.

Air Force tacked on their final run of the evening at 9-7 in the top of the stretch after Burdine singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI single from Niednagel.

The bottom of the eighth saw the Wolf Pack solidify the score at 10-7.

The two teams will meet for game two on Saturday March 21 at 2 p.m. PT/3 p.m. MT.
