PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Robert Morris scored two goals in the first four minutes of the game and defeated Air Force, 4-1, in game two of an Atlantic Hockey America quarterfinal series, Saturday, March 7, at Clearview Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa. With the Colonial win, the teams will play a deciding third game on Sunday, March 8, at 5:05 pm ET. The winner will advance to the AHA semifinals, March 13-15.
Robert Morris (13-19-3 overall) scored two goals, 48 seconds apart, in the first four minutes of the game. Julian Beaumont scored on a flurry in front at 2:48 and then Dario Beljo scored with a wrister from the slot at 3:36.
Midway through the second period, Colonial Patrick Johnson scored on rebound at 9:44 for a 3-0 lead. Late in the period, the Falcons broke up a pass at the blue line, but it ended up on the tape of Luke van Why who skated down the slot and scored at 17:50 for a 4-0 lead.
Air Force (18-14-4 overall) got on the board early in the third when Chris Hedden scored his team-leading 12th of the season. Freshman Hayden Nichol won a faceoff in the offensive zone and Hedden snapped a wrister from the high slot at 1:40 to make the score 4-1.
"They came out and kicked our butt" head coach Frank Serratore said. "They played with a desperation that we knew they would. We didn't match their intensity and they imposed their will on us. We needed to survive that, but by the time the game settled, we were down 2-0. We need to be better tomorrow. It's all about tomorrow. They showed us tonight how badly they don't want their season to end. How badly to do we want our season not to end? We will find out."
Air Force outshot RMU, 34-31. Dominik Wasik made 16 saves through the first two periods. Junior Carter Clafton made 11 saves in the third period. Charlie Schenkel earned the win of the Colonials, stopping 33 of 34. Air Force was 0-for-2 on the power play and killed all three of RMU's man advantages.
