USAF ACADEMY – The fourth-ranked Blue Devils outscored, 21-6, Saturday afternoon at Falcon Stadium. Duke, now 6-0, is off to the best start to a season since the 10-0 team in 2021. The Falcons, on a five-game skid, drop to 1-5.
Air Force's four scorers were led by standout freshman Christian Schweiger who scored his third hat trick performance this season. C4C Schweiger leads the team with 20 points on 13 goals and seven assists.
Cole Rassas, Jack Gounaris, and Tyler Smart combined for the other three goals. Rassas, AF's second-leading scorer, has eight goals this season. He dished some help to Schweiger in an extra-man opportunity, upping his season assists count to five.
Gounaris, an effective freshman defenseman, tallied a goal for a second-straight game. Smart, notching his second goal this season, delivered a shot right through the center of Patrick Jameison who lost it to the net.
Defensively, seven Falcons accounted for seven caused turnovers. Cole Cunningham, responsible for a CTO, picked up a team-best five ground balls in the effort. Duke ultimately won the ground ball battle, 42-25. The Blue Devils, who averaged 50.4 shots per game heading into USAFA, took 58 shots on the game.
Duke freshman attackman Michael Ortlieb scored three goals and handed out six assists for nine points. The Blue Devils have scored 20-plus goals in three different games this season, marking the most since the 1999 squad scored 20-plus goals four times.
Duke's 43 goals allowed after six games are the fewest by the Blue Devils in the first six games of a season since the 2008 squad gave up just 32 in the first six.
Next up, another lacrosse powerhouse is coming to the Academy as Syracuse takes on the Falcons on Thursday, March 12. The visit marks first time the Orangemen have made the trip to USAFA. Gametime is slated for 3 p.m. MT.
