Air Force Falls in Finale to Grand Canyon

PHOENIX, Ariz., - Falcon baseball (18-20, 9-6) dropped the series finale, 16-12, to Grand Canyon (14-15, 6-9) on Sunday afternoon at GCU Ballpark. Air Force totaled 12 hits and seven strikeouts.

Kayden Bradshaw recorded a grand slam for four RBIs and scored a trio of runs. Walker Zapp went 3-for-5 for one RBI and scored two. Wyatt Hanoian, Luke Elmore, and Cole Jenkins logged one RBI apiece.

Jordan Watkins and Davis Rhyne both threw one full inning before Josh Holst (1-3) entered for 2.1 frames. Charlie Russell went 0.2 innings before Trey Rutledge logged three innings with a trio of strikeouts.

The Birds put up a strong eight-spot to open the game. Back-to-back walks to Bradshaw and Niednagel, along with a Hanoian single, loaded the bases early. A fielder's choice and an error saw all the runners remain safe and plated a pair of runs. Two consecutive RBI singles by Zapp and Elmore put two more across the plate. To reload the bags, Jenkins drew a walk before Bradshaw launched a grand slam 392 feet out of the ballpark.

Grand Canyon responded with a three-run homer to trim the deficit in the bottom of the first and added five in the second to tie the game at 8-8.

In the top of the third, Air Force answered and reclaimed the lead at 11-8. A pair of single from Jenkins and Taylor put runners on the bags. Both advanced on an error and Jenkins was able to score. The bases were loaded once more after Bradshaw was hit by a pitch and Niednagel singled. A fielder's choice to Hanoian and an error on GCU's shortstop allowed the pair of Taylor and Bradshaw to score.

GCU leveled the score in the bottom of the fifth and pulled ahead, 15-11, in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Air Force cut into the deficit in the top of six, 15-12. Zapp made it to third on a single, wild pitch, and a flyout before Jenkins grounded out to send the run home.

A sacrifice fly enabled the Lopes to pull ahead in the bottom of eight, 16-12.

The Falcons head to Austin, Texas for a midweek matchup against No. 4 Texas on Tuesday April 21 at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
