Falcons Break Stolen Bases Program Record in Narrow Loss to Northern Colorado

GREELEY, Colo. – Air Force baseball (21-21) dropped a close 5-4 contest to Northern Colorado (12-31) on Tuesday afternoon at Jackson Field, but not before breaking their second program record of the season, this time in stolen bases. With four steals against the Bears, the Falcons surpassed the previous program record of 122 stolen bases and now sit at 124 on the season. Air Force also totaled eight hits while the pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts.

Tripp Garrish led the offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and his 10th home run of the season. Walker Zapp added the Falcons' other RBI.

On the mound, Josh Holst (1-5) got the start and struck out four while allowing three earned runs. Cranz Smelcer made a brief two-out appearance and surrendered one run before Easton Miller settled things down with three scoreless innings and three strikeouts. Charlie Russell and Gunner Gilmore each tossed an inning and recorded two strikeouts apiece.

Northern Colorado struck first with four runs in the third inning to take an early 4-0 lead.

Garrish responded in the top of the fourth, launching a solo home run to left field to cut the deficit to 4-1.

After two scoreless innings, the Bears added another run in the seventh to stretch the lead to 5-1.

Air Force answered immediately in the eighth. Kayden Bradshaw singled to left and moved to third on a double by Ben Niednagel. Zapp followed with an RBI groundout, and a passed ball later allowed Niednagel to score, trimming the deficit to 5-3.

In the ninth, Garrish sparked one final rally with a leadoff single. He stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error, and scored on a wild pitch, but the Falcons came up one run short as Northern Colorado held on for the 5-4 final.

Air Force returns to Mountain West play this weekend with a road series at New Mexico from Friday, May 1 through Sunday, May 3 at Santa Ana Star Field.
