EUGENE, Ore. – Texas Tanner closed out his illustrious Air Force Academy career with a fourth-place finish in the discus throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships this afternoon (June 12) in Eugene.
With a throw of 63.75 meters (209'2"), Tanner earned a fourth-place finish in the 24-man discus final – giving the recent USAFA graduate top-four NCAA finishes in both the discus (fourth) and hammer (second) this week at Hayward Field.
After opening the competition with a foul, Tanner responded with a meet-leading distance of 63.75 meters on his next attempt. Following a 59.25-meter mark on his final attempt of the prelims, he led the overall field heading into the final. He surpassed the 60-meter mark on all three attempts of the finals (61.50m, 63.20m, 61.46m), but his second-round throw of 63.75 meters remained his best of the day, which was fourth in the final standings.
The finish secured Tanner another First-Team All-America distinction, marking his third-straight top-eight finish of 2026 – dating back to the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The honor is also the sixth All-America award of Tanner's illustrious career – a total that is two more than any other athlete in Academy history.
Tanner's 13 championship points (eight hammer, five discus) placed Air Force in a tie for 19th in the final team standings of the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships – a placement that accounted for the men's first top-20 finish ever at the national meet (indoors or outdoors) and their highest outdoor finish since 1964 (25th). The finish, which came in a field of 65 scoring teams and 136 that had at least one athlete in Eugene, was third among non-P4 schools.
Although the collegiate season is now complete, the recently commissioned second lieutenant will continue to throw, as a member of the Air Force World Class Athlete Program (WCAP), and has several more competitions lined up for the summer.
